Decisions and Judgment

Next    Previous

Always, always, always make your own decisions.  As master of your vessel, you are legally responsible for whatever happens; do you really want to let others dictate your actions?  If you take advice from someone and you damage or lose your boat, you're the one who'll suffer, not your advisor.  Just keep that in mind...

Taking advice from others

There lots of well-meaning, but totally unqualified people out there who are happy to give you advice that may be completely wrong.  It's fine to listen, and to evaluate stuff that people tell you, but if you don't know your advisors' qualifications, take their advice with a lot of skepticism.

"Good judgment comes from experience, and most experience comes from poor judgment."

I think it makes sense to get a little experience before you embark on your cruise of a lifetime.  You'll know your boat, you'll know a little basic seamanship, some navigation, and you'll be far better prepared to deal with problems that inevitably occur.  You'll probably make better decisions when faced with marginal situations, too.

We define an adventure as something that's better in the telling than in the actual experiencing.  Most adventures occur because of poor judgment.  Here are a few stories for you.
