We almost never tow our dinghy, and we're always careful to tie it up short when underway, or when we may have to move unexpectedly (such as, when in a marginal anchorage).  It's not a bad idea to use a floating painter, either, to prevent the line from getting tangled up with your propeller.  This can be an expensive experience.

 

June, 2005.  Vava'u, Tonga.  Something to watch for if you make a practice of towing your dinghy.  This made a big BANG! when it happened, and resulted in a bent shaft.
