Anchoring (dis)courtesy

Next    Previous

July, 2002:  Raroia Atoll, Tuamotu Islands, French, Polynesia.  We were happily anchored, the only boat in the anchorage, until these three yahoos came in and anchored, literally, right on top of us.  One of them nearly collided with us; they were that close.

Why on earth didn't these people leave us a little room?  The anchorage here is large enough to accommodate several SHIPS and there were plenty of other places they could have anchored.

It was a big inconvenience for us, but we moved because it was not safe to be so close, and it was patently obvious THEY didn't intend to move.

In the evening around Happy Hour we got our payback.  They were all partying on one of the boats, the wind shifted and blew hard, and you should have seen the activity as they scrambled back to their boats, fended one another off, and shortened rodes to avoid further collisions!  Spreader lights on, VHF radio chatter, shouting, dinghies tearing back and forth, and so on.  The fun lasted over an hour.

Served 'em right.

Next day, did they move to prevent a recurrence?  Of course not...
