GRIB files and forecasting

Next    Previous

GRIB files are computer-generated wind forecasts that are available from the Internet or from various digital radio services, such as SailMail and WinLink.  They use computer models to predict the wind and barometric pressures over the next few days, for an area you specify when you request it.

GRIBs are, usually, amazingly accurate.  But, as the saying goes, they're automatically generated by a computer model and do not reflect cyclones, convergence zones, fronts, and other weather features.  So, you should not rely on GRIBs as your only source of weather forecasting.  You should get weather maps, since they give you a better idea of the Big Picture.

We've encountered lots of folks who totally rely on GRIBs for their weather information, and believe implicitly that they perfectly foretell the future.  This, of course, ain't so.

GRIBs are great, but use 'em with a little caution...
