November, 2005: Between Savusavu, Fiji and Tawawa, Kiribati. A marlin came up to take a few swipes at the teaser (usually a chugger or something else really splashy) that we almost always tow about 40 or 50 feet behind the boat. If you put it on a reel with the clicker on and the drag set fairly tight, you'll hear the clicker so you know when you have a visitor. We've had this happen a number of times, it is great entertainment on otherwise dull passages, or when it's rough and you don't really want to hook a fish. This one hung around long enough for us to get some photos and video of it. You can clearly see the bill (submerged), the dorsal fin (above the surface), and the tail (submerged) in the top photo; the body is the dark area to the left of the orange teaser.
Here, again, you can see the orange teaser, with the darker body to the left. The tail is above the surface just to the right of the splash. The fish just struck the teaser but, again, we yanked it away. He was getting pretty frustrated and worked up by this time, having struck and lost the teaser several times. If you have a suitable lure ready on your heavy-duty rod/reel or handline, this is a perfect time to pitch it out in front of the marlin while someone quickly retrieves the teaser. The fish is excited, wants to eat something, and you have a better-than-normal chance of a hookup! Just be ready for a battle if you do... |
