January, 2004: Port Arthur, Tasmania. This is one of my favorite images. It took us awhile to work out where we had to set the camera to get this shot, and some coordination to get RED exactly where we wanted her. It all was ultimately done on the spur of the moment, though, and once we found this overlook, Beth set up the camera and I hustled down to drive RED to the "right" spot. All of our communication was via hand signals. Port Arthur was where convicts were sent if they couldn't be managed in Hobart or Sydney. It was notorious for the hard conditions there, but now it's a national park and a very beautiful one at that. The building in the foreground is a cathedral which burned in the 1800's but the sandstone endured. There are many other sandstone structures on this site, but the cathedral is the most impressive. We spent several weeks in this lovely setting. |
