Tigerwood (goncalo alves)

Tigerwood may be one of several species of wood from Africa or Brazil, though goncalo alves is specifically from Brazil.

Tigerwood is very hard and dense.  It has a waxy feel with a natural luster and is relatively easy to work.  It finishes beautifully with oil and/or wipe-on polyurethane and has a beautiful matte look with dark brown highlights on a golden brown field.  The color will deepen as it ages.

Tigerwood grain varies considerably; this exceptional piece would be considered a Premium Select grade miniSpinner.  Even the "regular" stuff is pretty attractive, though.
