About custom boatbuilding - Why?

Next    Previous

Why would you build (or have built) a custom boat?

After 26,000 miles and 14 years of boat ownership, we had a very good idea what kind of boat we wanted.  No production boats were anywhere near our ideal, plus we were intrigued by the notion of having a custom boat that was exactly what we felt we wanted.  So, we were committed.

Upsides

You get exactly what you ask for.  (Bear in mind, this might not be what you wanted or THOUGHT you were getting - you have to have enough experience to KNOW what you're doing.)

The entire process is fascinating and can be most rewarding.  Boatbuilders tend to be very intelligent and talented people, and we certainly enjoyed working with the folks at Waterline.

It's a great feeling when your baby hits the water and turns out to be as much or more than you had expected, as RED was for us.

August, 2004:  RED all alone in Ketu Bay, Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand.  We spent months in the Sounds, and were amazed to have anchorages like this all to ourselves during the entire winter.  By Alaska standards, the weather was quite mild; temperatures rarely dropped below freezing, and the wind was mostly calm.  When it blew, though, it howled!
