DesignRED began as a rather rough CAD drawing (though many of the details were quite refined) of a 52 foot boat; the minimum size we felt could accommodate our needs. After discussing our requirements with Ed, he suggested that we could tweak his latest 47 foot design, extend it a little, and fit our needs into a 48 foot hull. This would cost considerably less than a 52 foot boat. Ed started with the lines of the 47's hull and after stretching it to 48 feet, giving us a little more beam aft, extending the waterline from 39 to 43 feet (more speed), and tweaking a few other minor things, we realized that he was right; a 48 foot boat would work. Beth and I had already pretty well fixed the profile, elevations, and the interior layout, so we didn't pursue the 47's interior. Besides having the distinctive Waterline Yachts styling and quality, RED is an original and the only one of her kind. One of the fun parts about doing a custom boat. Waterline 48 (RED's) design
RED's layout extends the house forward to the mast, which greatly enlarges the main cabin. There's considerably more glass area than the earlier 47 design. The dinette and galley are on the upper level and have a superb view because the elevations were carefully planned so that when standing or sitting at the dinette, your eye is centered vertically on the windows. The visibility is amazing and the interior pleasant and bright. It's the first thing people remark on when they come aboard RED. You'll see in the next page. Forward of the dinette and down one step are the head, forward cabin, and a storage/work area that Beth uses for art material. Starboard side aft is a spacious equipment area and workbench, with excellent access to all machinery and the steering gear. The engine is directly beneath the companionway and has excellent access to all sides and the top of the engine. RED has 6' 4" headroom (or a bit more) throughout.
Waterline 47 design (for comparison)
This layout has a much shorter house than RED's; the forward facing windows are placed well behind the mast. The head is to port as you come down the companionway, with a large cabin to starboard. The galley is on the upper level to port, and the large chart area to starboard. You step down to the dining area.
